"happy" age home

last week i visited a old ("happy")age home through initiative taken by my college's Social Responsibility Team. "gokuldham aashram" is a really well maintained place near Hinjewadi, Pune.

it was a unique experience. i was little gloom going there thinking all these long faces. generally we associate old age home with the deprived old people who's good for nothing children have just dumped them out of sight.

most of these premises did come true.

but i don't like to sympathize with old, underprivileged or handicaps because it does not help them a one bit. if you treat them with overt affection then it will make them weak. they want a treatment of an equal. some one to give them a chance. just like Seabiscuit after whom i have named this blog. he just required to be considered without prejudiced as well.

also one another thing struck me that we always paint the picture of bad kids. who left their parents in lurches and curse them may be. but rarely people consider the fact that parents might not have been angels them selves. who knows? but we are certainly prejudiced.

this made me think something really sad when i was leaving the place. I don't want to grow old with or without kids. i have seen my grand parents. My grandmother was bed ridden for he last few years and she herself was not happy with the situation.

to end with the happy note. we did had a great time there. we sang, played thumbola (or housie). they really liked it. hope to see them again and have great time.

this encounter made me resolve to become a pen friend of one of the "happy" friend of mine. "Happy" age home is really a place where happiness is present in the form of people in similar conditions form extraordinary bonds and get on with it.

Our season starts here

i am a huge gunners fan. we call our self gooners.

OK for the people who don't know a thing about what i am talking about; gunners is the nickname of Arsenal Football Club. they play in English premier league. North London club with great footballing tradition and i love them.

this summer was not that good for us. with Adebayor's non committal tendencies over the summer and absence of real big signing made even staunch of fans skeptic of our footballing season to come. we signed Samir Nasri, wonder kid Aron Ramsey and a baffling Silvester from Man U.

in first 11 games we lost 3 games which was the tally for entire last season and drew other 2. we were 6 points behind league leaders Chelsea and Liverpool. with only 2 points in last 3 games , heart breaking draw against arch rivals SP*RS(to be read as spurs), and a dreadful loss to stoke city. Six of the first team players injured could it have been any worse.

wait it was.......to top it all up we were up against reigning champions Man U(Manchester United) today. this was the make or break game. loss would have definitely ended our season prematurely. so it seemed when the game began. Man U had great openings. But could not capitalise and within 10 min or so we started finding our rhythm. it was really dominating stuff by Gunners. they kept pushing forward and soon on 22nd min. Samir Nasri struck. OK it was a deflected goal still it was coming all along. Man U did had decent chances which they did not take them and Gunners sure did punish them. couple of minutes into second half and an incisive pass from Ces Fabregas( the best player on the team) tucked in again by Nasri. gunners did defend valiantly and a late strike by Rafael de silva ( the boy is destined for greatness) could not save Man U from sinking.

it was a fair result even a Man U fan will agree and it makes season more colourful now with all four top teams stacked up within 4 points. Gunners did show some character to came out fighting and pass the stern test with flying colours.

Kudos!!! our season starts here.

JUMBO the great

He does not turn the ball enough! He is just a flash in pan! Not good enough to play at test level!

these are some of the comments which "experts" made of kumble when he burst on to the scene and since then hardly he has looked back. He had a very illustrious career which many would dream off and which makes you proud to be an Indian.

greatest quality of kumble was his tenacity. he never gave up. Underdog personified. he always tried and gave 100% no matter if it was a spinning track of Kotla or a green top at Headingly. He always did let his bowling do the talking. whenever he was dropped he came back with more vigour and success. He did conduct himself very well. His only visit to match referees room was during Australia where he has to go in for Harbhajan. this speaks lot about his character and what kind of person he is.

Statistics don't lie. well they really don't. He is by far most successful Indian to hold the ball. Highest wicket taker in Tests as well as One dayers. Only the second guy to secure Perfect 10 in test cricket history. He really come to limelight in his man of the series performance against England in 1992. we automatically become toast of India within a short time span. Kumble's flipper started making rounds of Indian drawing rooms. Under captainship of azhar he did flourish. i remember in earlier times he used to be India's bowler at the death in one dayers.

If i have to put one outing of kumble which will never be forgotten in cricketing world; it wont be the perfect 10 but seeing him bowling in that Antigua test against West Indies. Kumble got hit on jaw by dillon and diagnosed of a fractured. he was suppose to be on his way back home for surgery. But when India started bowling kumble saw some assistance for the spinners and risked bowling with a bandage strapped jaw. What more? he got great Lara out. indians in crowd started singing " saare jahan se accha...." which did brought tears to eyes of every Indian. Its a postcard moment of Indian cricket. May be Kapil holding the world cup at lords only to top it.

even in his last match he bowled with 12 stitches to his left hand without sedation. hats off to you Kumble the great.

He retired last week befitting to a farewell a champion deserves. Definitely he don't get the credit rightfully for his contribution because for some he did not turn the ball enough or we had great Tendulkar and Dravid doing heroics with bat. No one with decent cricketing sense will ever speak of Indian cricket without mentioning this great fighter. then you wonder if he had a champion bowler at the other end what he could have achieved.

we will definitely miss you Mr. Indian cricket!!!!

Obama what else

It would be a cardinal sin to talk about anything else today and why not by far this is the most happening thing happened to the financially stricken US. I seriously hope it is for the best.

today i was away since to morning to attend classes which is what i do most of the days. before leaving for the college i did see Obama leading 200-128 which was sure enough indication of an impressive win. By the afternoon my friend conformed that it has happened. Barack Obama is the next US president.

Its exciting time ahead to see what all changes Obama will actually bring. first and foremost being a finance student how he will respond to the global meltdown is what concerns me. There is already a cry from EU about "lets get things sorted" to Obama after his great victory. the economic machinery's response to the measures taken by virtually every nation is something to be seen over time. Worlds wishes are with him

I went through his victory speech text which is very impressive and talks about new age have come. Obama's chant during campaign was "you can do it" "yes you can". Which met a equal crowd chant after it was declared that Sen. Obama is victorious " yes we can" "yes we did". what Obama has achieved is of gigantic proportions. In 250 years of independent America he is the first African-American Presidential nominee from either of the two political parties "Republican" and "Democrat". Racial history, civil war and all the holy c**p has made this moment even more special and makes US truly independent all over again.

Obama is feared to be socialist but i am very sure in financial mess that US is in it can ill afford the socialist measures and hopefully we will see many many "brilliant" decisions like his strategy to dismantle McCain.

For all Indians there is a good news too. Obama has already pledge to take relations with India to new level. Kudos and visionary to speak about India on his victory day.

This is a watershed of US history and this leaves me to think when Indians will reach this maturity and treat Dalits with equality. Also Dalits to rise above social stigma and conduct themselves better. I seriously hope to see that day.
